The Lord God had given them their freedom from Egypt (a type of the world system) by a GREATdeliverance. Freedom to go and worship Him. Freedom to become a kingdom of priests. He delivered them by the Passover blood, when He came down to judge the gods of Egypt.
To make a long story really short, they failed.
He parted the Red Sea!
He fed them with manna!
He kept them! even their clothes and shoes!
He gave them His Word at Mount Sinai!
Even tho He led them with a cloud by day, and a fire by night. Even tho He gave them Moses as their leader, they failed to believe His Word.
What was the result?
Lets see what the book of Hebrews says about them.
Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, TODAY if you will hear His voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: when your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my REST..) Take heed brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called TODAY; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. ….While it is said, TODAY if you will hear His voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation….But with whom was He grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness? And to whom sware He that they should not enter into His REST, but to them that believed not? So we see that they could not enter in because of UNBELIEF. Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left US of entering into His REST, any of you should seem to come short of it…..for He spake in a certain place of the 7th day on this wise, And God did REST the 7th day from all His works. And in this place again, If they shall enter into my REST. Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of UNBELIEF: There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. Let us labour therefore to enter into that REST, lest anyman fall after the same example of unbelief. HEBREWS 3 and 4
